Click here for a match report. Patsy Hanrahan (April 2006) - It is with regret we have to report the passing last Tuesday of Patsy Hanrahan, a stalwart of Old Aloysians and also the brother-in-law of our own Fred Nuckey. Patsy went to St Aloysius College in Highgate and joined the Old Aloysians Association before going into the RAF for three years in 1953. When he left the RAF he rejoined Old Aloysians and played for them for many years as an Outside Left. He was very quick in those days, although very much one footed, and also played for Duncombe Sports and Alexandra Park Veterans, whilst serving in many roles on Aloysians Committee. When he retired from playing he kept his interest in AFA football and could be seen at many AFA grounds during the season. The last AFA game that he saw was the London Old Boys Cup Jack Perry Vets semi-final between Old Aloysians and Old Woodhouseians last Sunday, 9th April. He was also a keen cricketer and played for many years at Old Minchendians, where he captained one of the sides. After retiring from playing cricket, he then went on to Umpire for them for a few years. Patsy's Funeral will be held on Thursday 20th April, 11.00am at St. Pauls Church, Church Hill, Winchmore Hill N21 1JA. The nearest station is Winchmore Hill, First Capital Connect (formerly WAGN). The
burial will be at 12.30pm at New Southgate Cemetery, Brunswick Park Road, New

Spring Cups - Optional (March 2006) - The
2005-06 season has seen a “good” winter, with few postponements, and as a
consequence many clubs and sides will finish their league programmes by the
middle of March, even by the end of February. Generally these will be clubs who
do not have fixture backlogs because they have exited early from cups. A number
of clubs have approached the League Match Secretaries concerned about the early
end to the season, with its effect on bar profits, player retention and so
forth. We also recognise that many clubs and players do not simply want to play
“friendlies” – in the modern world there is much more of a wish for
“competitive football”, in whatever guise. To try and provide football to the end of the season (end of April) for our clubs we have introduced Optional “Spring Cups”. This is an experimental idea, and would not necessarily run every season as it will be weather dependent. We envisage these cups are being of “minor” status – they are an optional competition to provide a form of competitive football for clubs whose seasons would otherwise finish early. Click
here for more
details about the AFC Spring Cups. Any feedback on the Spring Cups should be
directed to the League
Match Secretaries. Old
Suttonians Centenary Tournament (March 2006)
- "Unfortunately
Old Suttonians have reluctantly decided to cancel the Easter 7-a-side tournament
on 15th April. Despite the club’s best efforts there has been a
shortage in the number of firm entries from clubs interested in participating
which meant that it would not have been possible to do justice to the day. The
club would like to thank all clubs and referees who were planning to join us on
that day.” As there will be no AFC League matches on Saturday 15th April (Easter Saturday), Old Suttonians are inviting applications for teams to take part in the Centenary 7-a-side tournament on that is planned for this date at their main ground in Northey Avenue, Cheam. The first matches will kick off at 11am. The format is for 8 pitches to accommodate mini leagues of 6 teams. Therefore there will be at least 5 games for all participants. The top two in each group progress to knock out stages. Squads of 10 are allowed using 3 subs at any time. Competition rules will be under the FA rules for small sided competitions which will be sanctioned by the AFA. Old Suttonians are looking for 3 Referees to be allocated to each pitch. The entry fee is £50 per team. Teams should apply to David Canning (020 8644 6466) of Old Suttonians FC for an entry form at AFC Regional Meetings (February 2006) - The Executive Committee of the AFC includes a good number of Club Representatives elected at the AGM who help to ensure that we remain firmly focussed on providing the sort of football in which our Clubs want to participate. We are keen to strengthen links with our member Clubs and our referees and to receive feedback on how we are doing in administering the competition and how we should be looking to develop into the future. These days there is only limited opportunity for discussion at the AGM and no forum for discussions involving referees at all so this season we are launching a series of three regional meetings during February and March. The meetings will provide opportunities for Club Officers, players, referees and League Officers to get together in an informal atmosphere to discuss issues of interest and importance to the Amateur Football Combination and its continued development. The venues and dates of the meetings are as follows:
Each meeting will start at 7pm with a presentation highlighting key issues relevant to the AFC which will be followed by an open forum and discussion of these and any other issues which you want to raise. The host Clubs have kindly offered to serve food during the evening and the bar will be open. We aim to conclude the meetings by 10 pm. The meetings are open to anyone who wants to attend, Club Officers, players, referees, and league officers. Although the venues have been chosen to provide one meeting per AFC region (North, West and South) anyone may choose to attend one outside their region if that is more convenient. Attendance at the meetings is not compulsory but we hope that there will be a good turn out since the more people taking part, the better the feedback to the AFC Executive. So please don’t miss this opportunity to have your say about the AFC while enjoying excellent hospitality amongst friends. If you have any questions about the meetings please don’t hesitate to contact the League Secretary, John Monk. AFC vs London Legal League (February 2006) - The AFC vs London Legal League Representative Game has now been postponed, due to the unavailability of Hanwell Town F.C. This fixture will not be re-arranged this season. The next Representative Game is on Wednesday 22nd March, against the Arthurian League. This is an away game, but is also at Hanwell Town F.C.. AFA Development News (February 2006) - The January issue of AFA Development News is now available as a downloadable Adobe PDF file. Click here to download a copy. Firs Farm (February 2006) - Clubs are warned of recent thefts of valuables from cars at Firs Farm. It appears the MO of those concerned is to wait and watch teams putting valuables in cars and then break into them once games are in progress. Nor should clubs assume that the changing rooms are secure, as the doors can be forced (don't ask me how I know!). We would recommend that valuables are taken out onto the field of play and left with the goalkeeper. Bob Leach Remembered (February 2006) - I am saddened to report that Bob Leach (Phoenix Old Boys Vice Chairman) passed away last week after a long and brave fight against cancer. Bob was one of the original founders of Phoenix Old Boys in 1960 and was an active player into his mid 40's. Bob held the post of Chairman for many years before stepping down into the role Vice Chairman and had been a stalwart of the club ever since, still helping and assisting Phoenix through his illness. His funeral will be held at Slough Crematorium, Stoke Road, Slough, SL2 5AX on Tuesday 28th February at 2:00pm and is open to anyone that knew him and would like to attend. John Squire Remembered (February 2006) - It is with regret we have to report that John Squire, a stalwart of Old Tiffinians, passed away last week. John was always a driving force in ensuring the club maintained good administration, and was renowned for having played for the club continuously for 50 years, an achievement that brought the BBC Grandstand Cameras and then presenter, Bob Wilson, to Grists in the late 1970s. He will be missed by club members past and present, and by his many friends from a lifetime of amateur football. GOAL and Child Protection (February 2006) - The AFC wishes to encourage as many of its club officers, league officers and referees to attend Child Protection "Best Practice" courses and complete CRB checks, as possible. GOAL is the Football Association Child Protection campaign. The FA is now involved in a major programme in this area - all youth team coaches should have already undergone CRB checks, and referees are now also being encouraged to complete checks, with the costs currently still being paid by the Football Association. Over time the FA intends to expand this to all people involved in organised football, whether they be referees, league officers or club officers. The more people involved in our football who have been checked, and understand "Best Practice", the better the environment for our youngsters, and the lesser the opportunities for the tiny minority of "unwanted people" to get involved. If you have not already completed a CRB check, please consider doing so. In AFC football we have many under 18's, and the more club officers, league officers and referees who have completed the checks (and ideally, also attended a 3 hour/1 evening Child Protection Courses) the better, creating a stronger and safer environment for all concerned. The courses and checks are not intrusive, and we can thoroughly recommend them as a learning experience. The key to all of this is "Best Practice", and having referees with CRB Checks and Child Protection Training both assists us with referee appointments (from next season we may be restricted in who we can appoint) but also in monitoring clubs and ensuring they are following proper guidelines - on a Saturday our referees are our eyes and ears. What should do you do if you see a 40 year old reducing a 16 year old to tears? What should you do if you see a 16 year old reducing another 16 year old to tears? What should you do if you see a 16 year old reducing a 40 year old to tears? All of these are issues and questions that you'll find out about as part of GOAL. At present, CRB checks for qualified referees are being paid for by the Football Association. If you haven't already had your check done, please do so, and please consider a Child Protection Course. They are the future of our football, and we want them to learn in the best possible environment. The more of our refereeing fraternity who know the ropes, the better. For more information on Child Protection and CRB Checks, please see our Youth Section, or contact the AFC Child Protection Officer, Danny McConnell, or the Office of your County Football Association. AFC vs London Legal League (January 2006) - The next AFC Representative game against the London Legal League, due on Wednesday 8th February has been postponed, due to Dulwich Hamlet F.C., being unavailable. This match may be re-arranged for later in the season. Old Suttonians Centenary Tournament (January 2006) - As there will be no AFC League matches on Saturday 15th April (Easter Saturday), Old Suttonians are inviting applications for teams to take part in the Centenary 7-a-side tournament on that is planned for this date at their main ground in Northey Avenue, Cheam. Teams should apply to David Canning (020 8644 6466) of Old Suttonians FC for an entry form at dave.canning@vnuinc.co.uk as soon as possible as slots are filling up. Referees
interested should contact Sean Phillippo (020 8653 9507) at sean.phillippo@tiscali.co.uk

The next fixture is on Wednesday 18th January 2006, a 2pm KO vs Oxford University at Iffley Road, Oxford. All support is welcome. This requirement has been laid down for us by the Football Association and the AFA, and has to be enforced. You can download these forms by clicking here. Data Protection Act: This information is being collected by the Amateur Football Combination for the purposes of Player Registration and will be made available to the Amateur Football Alliance. It may also be made available to other County FA's and to the Football Association. It will not be made available to any external organisations for Commerical Purposes. London Financial Football Association (December 2005) - The following letter was sent out to all clubs, officers and referees by John Monk, AFC Secretary, on 1st December 2005:- Dear
all, Earlier
this season the London Financial FA ('LFFA') approached both the Southern
Amateur League ('SAL') and the AFC to discuss the possibility of their
clubs joining one or other of the two competitions en masse at the end of this
season. This followed administrative difficulties which the LFFA has
experienced which, they feel, jeopardise the viability of the LFFA as a separate
competition. The LFFA met with both the AFC and the SAL for exploratory
talks and on Tuesday night they held an EGM to discuss possible ways forward
with their Clubs. The
AFC has now received a message from the LFFA advising us that their Clubs voted
last night to seek a merger with the AFC. The AFC Executive Committee has
already agreed to support a merger in principle and a framework setting out in
broad terms the conditions under which it could proceed. We
are forming a steering group including representatives of the LFFA to plan the
merger so that it can be completed following our AGM in June 2006. I am
arranging the first steering group meeting to take place shortly when we will be
discussing the steps necessary to make the merger effective. One
topic which the steering group will discuss is how the AFC should go about
consulting its existing member Clubs on the merger. Whatever route the
steering group and Executive Committee agree to follow the Clubs will have the
final say on merger proposals either at the AGM next June or at an earlier
Extraordinary General Meeting. The
Steering Group will be reporting progress regularly at Executive Committee
meetings and we will also be keeping our Clubs informed of progress via the
website and fixtures circulars. The merger will also be a topic for
discussion at regional meetings with Clubs which will be held in February. I
have sent a message to the AFA advising them of these developments. Kind
regards, John
Monk Secretary,
Amateur Football Combination St Albans Rangers (December 2005) - St Albans Rangers, a well established Youth Football Club now seeking to add an adult section, have become the first club to be accepted for Associate Membership in the AFC. We would ask any club, particularly in the north, looking for a friendly, to please contact St Albans Rangers to see if one can be arranged. All were found be in breach of rule 10e, and considered to be stronger than the higher side within their club. AFC Officers Wanted (June 2005) - Are you happy with the way the AFC is being run? Would you like to have more say in how things are done within the AFC? Are you keen to get involved with running your league? The AFC Rules provide that together with the League Officers (Chairman, Hon Secretary, Treasurer, the Chairman of each sub-Committee etc.) up to 12 Club Representatives sit on the Executive Committee of the League. In addition, each Club Representative normally sits on one of the sub-committees of the League. Typically, as a Club Representative, you’ll be asked to attend one meeting per month. Club Representatives are very important because they ensure that the people who run the AFC remain closely in touch with the needs and requirements of our member Clubs – you are a direct voice of the clubs. Also being a Club representative gives you the opportunity to see at first hand how the league runs and what is involved. Very often people who start as Club Representatives move on to other offices in the competition and play vital roles in shaping the competition into the future. To be a Club Representative of the League Executive Committee, you must be an Officer of a Member Club. Following the Annual General Meeting we still have vacancies for a couple of Club Representatives, as well as a League Match Secretary and a Representative Team Secretary. If you have any club officers interested in standing for any of these, then please contact John Monk with the details of the person you wish to nominate. Click here for more details about the current officers and committees. Declan Meehan (Jun 2005) - Clubs should note that Declan Meehan (ex-Ravenscroft Old Boys) has been suspended by the AFA from playing until he has settled £199 in fines due to the club as well as currently being under a 182 day ban.
