Promotion and Relegation at the end of 2003/04

March/April 2004 - Following the January letter sent to clubs the Constitution Committee received 69 replies from clubs. All clubs who replied are happy with the proposed promotion and relegation plans and those clubs who did not reply have been fined.

The letter included a question regarding the regionalisation of football in the lower Senior Divisions and 22 clubs said yes, 11 said no, 4 would like more information, and the remaining 32 made no comment or were happy to go along with the Committee’s plans.

The Committee has discussed this issue and then further proposed that the regionalisation of Senior 3 and Senior 4 should take place in time for next season, 2004/05. This effectively means Senior 3 and Senior 4 would be merged to form Senior 3 North and Senior 3 South.

The tier of divisions below Senior 3 North and South will continue to be referred to as Intermediate.

This was circulated to clubs who were mainly in agreement, so this proposal will now be put to the AGM. The revised League structure would therefore be as follows:-

Please note that these changes will be subject to some adjustment, as new clubs may be applying to join the league and so forth.

The present two Intermediate Divisions would then be split into three regional divisions and can be called either Intermediate North, West and South  or 1 North, West and South. We will then move teams up from the regions to fill in the gaps caused by the introduction of the additional division at this level.

Promotion and relegation in future years would be based on 2 up and 2 down, except that 4 teams will be relegated from Senior 2; and 3 teams from each of the two Senior 3 divisions.

We would wish to make the following points: -

  1. We can assure all Clubs that none of their teams will suffer due to this proposal. By moving up the regionalised tier of divisions a number of sides will be higher placed in the league next season than previously proposed, and none lower.
  2. The top three divisions will remain Non-regionalised.
  3. The League wishes to keep 5 Senior Divisions so that no team loses its senior status due to this proposal.
  4. The jump from regional football to Non-Regional Senior Football can be quite daunting for some Clubs and teams. The introduction of regional senior football will go some way to alleviate that problem.
  5. The creation of Senior 3 North and South actually makes the pyramid smaller. A club trying to move from regionalised football to the Premier Division has one less step to take to get there.
